there are laws in various states about right of entry vs. right to “peaceful enjoyment” of the property (for the sake of tenants.) The law in CA states that repairs must have 24 hours written notice and must happen between the hours of 9-5 Monday thru Friday. It would be good to check your state laws.

I’m an Active Duty member of the Military living in an Apartment, I go on TDY (Temporary Duty) often. When I’m away for duty, it usually for one or two weeks at a time, they have been several times when I return from duty to find lights on, thermostat adjusted to extremes temperatures. I was wondering, isn’t the Landlord suppose to notify me in advance of coming into my apartment?

Im not sure about the US, but in the UK there is a very strict policy about the right to quiet enjoyment of the property and also about the time to carry out repairs. Although there are no strict guidelines, the repairs must be carried out in a “reasonable time”. If you think that the time is “unreasonable” then you should speak to the landlord about formal action.

There is also legislation in the UK about the right to privacy. Basically a landlord has no valid reason to enter your property at all, except to make periodic checks and in the case of carrying out repairs. There are contractual remedies for breach of this provision.

From a moral standpoint, you are renting the place, why should anyone else be allowed to enter the property.
