I moved in and immediately notified the office that the carpets were too wet to put anything down. They did call a cleaning company, but since they had just been done, it would take a couple days to dry. Even after turning in the condition statement and notifying every few days, I did not have a shower (bad plumbing) to use for the entire month, the stove did not work, smoke alarm inop, inability to secure windows, etc. After repeatedly going into the office, taking the managers, it finally got fixed after 4 weeks. They only want to reduce my rent by $100 for the month ($658 to $558 – 1 BR, 1 Bath). I don’t think this is a fair amount. They say that is all they are authorized to give (normally only $50).

What can I do?

Have you thought about filing a complaint about your apartment with the Rental Protection Agency? There is a link at the top of the page to file a complaint. If you were without a shower for an entire month, I would think that $100 is not enough.

I would think that any where from 20% to 30% would be a fair deduction. The problem is that the apartment was still liveable, you could still use the other areas, so a complete discount of rent is probably not realistic or fair. Good luck with that, :)
