COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter) |
My apartment unit became infested with bed bugs; I found a bed bug in the spare bedroom on August 28 and immediately contacted the office. They sent someone to inspect the apartment and confirmed the issue. Zender Properties sent a letter informing that they would start treatment on September 14 and treatment would be complete October 12. Meanwhile, the infestation has only gotten worse, my bedroom is now infested and I had to move out due to the discomfort. Because it has taken them so long to begin treatment and fear of this becoming a reoccurring issue, I would like to be reimbursed for September's rent and prorated the 12 days that I will not be staying there in October. I would also like to break my lease once they have treated the apartment with no penalty, and receive compensation for any damages to furniture. The apartment's management has been aware of bed bugs in neighboring units for some time and failed to inform tenants or care for it in an appropriate and timely manner. When I first tried contacting the apartments manager, Doug, about how they are treating and my moving out and breaking the lease, my calls were ignored. Once I spoke to him he told me it could be possible to break the lease but "even if I did [I] would only take them with [me]". He also informed me that they have been treating the unit next to mine and will treat ours afterward, but they are not doing anything to protect the spread to any other units or returning to ours later. The conversation left me with more concerns and a feeling of discomfort around continuing to live there.
Zender Properties has been approaching this situation in a very unprofessional manner, with a complete disregard for the health and safety of the tenants. Their disregard for taking appropriate action is of great concern and I feel that it mandates appropriate action from outside agencies.
