COMPLAINT DETAILS (from renter) |
Tina Yeganeh in December sent a letter stating that they would have an exterminator perform bedbug prevention spraying on 12/23/13. The letter outlined steps for us (tenants) to take in order "to ensure 100% effectiveness." We took those precise steps outlined in her letter. Within two weeks following this treatment that was supposed to be 100% effective, we suffered many bed bug bites over a period of 5 days and contacted the rental office. Tina Yeganeh sent roommate Rika Ohkuma email on 1/22/14 confirming presence of bed bugs (after inspection by exterminator confirmed it) and immediately scheduled another treatment for one week later (1/29/14). The first treatment proved NOT to be 100% effective. Discussions with other tenants directly above our apartment confirmed they had persistent, ongoing bedbug problems back in late October and early November. Waterloo was negligent by not informing apartment abutters like us until the problem was out of control and then they only did so in late December. Discussions with the upstairs tenants further outlined the fact that their apartment has been sprayed five times in an 8-10 week timeframe. The tenants still report the presence of bedbugs after 5 treatments! Clearly, this single treatment, nor the five treatments done in the upstairs apartment has been 100% effective as promised. We are professional students that cannot repeatedly endure washing drapes, all clothing, bagging up all belongings and stacking it in the bathroom and kitchen as directed to permit ongoing spraying of pesticides that are ineffective. This has become a nightmare for us and now with only one week's notice, Tina Yeganeh is threatening us with being in violation of the lease agreement if we do not allow this spraying to continue. We cannot endure the extreme amount of time required to support repeated pesticide applications; the first being on short notice while one student is involved in an accelerated nursing program. We are also concerned with the health risks imposed by such repeated treatments. The lack of effectiveness in both our apartment and the upstairs apartment is forcing us to minimize our losses by terminating the rental contract in favor of locating another dwelling that will not require hours upon hours supporting ineffective pesticide treatments. Additionally, bed bug experts have told us the best means of extermination is through 140 degree heat for four hours but this contractor does not do this work.
