Landlords must offer and maintain housing that satisfies basic habitability requirements. As a tenant it’s your right to have the premises, including the surrounding common area, maintained in a safe and clean condition. Your landlord is required to make repairs, upon your request, to make the premises fit for living. He is also required to make repairs once he becomes aware even if you have not requested the specific repair. If he failed to repair something you might call the city or county housing code inspection agency. It’s their job to make sure that landlords obey the local housing code. But when doing this, you might have to wait a long time for a housing inspector to force the landlord to fix. So, it would be nice if you have some way to put pressure on the landlord by yourself.
