I'm sorry to have to break this to you but you've already said it - your contract says either party can choose to set your lease to non-renewal. Remember that you entered ina contract for a definite timeframe and that does not guarantee renewal at the end of the term. Besides, your landlord gave you a strong reason. The need to do repairs or renovations is actually a valid reason for your landlord to terminate your lease. Of course, if repairs are to be done, then the place will be unsafe for you and your family. As for your kids, I'm sure they will still get admission. There may be other places nearby that you can rent and to not bump into the same problem again, you can check the history of your next landlord by uisng RPA's landlord checking services.
