The owner should have insurance…………………… you pay your rent – it’s not your problem where the owner finds the funds to repair. Until you are invited to holiday dinner – business is business, and even then you might get stuck with the dishes!!

thanks for your response but theres no access to that part of the roof it was a covered porch that is now completely closed in so it would involve ripping down dry wall to get to it. would something like this be a cause to break the lease?

So you don’t think your landlord has the money to fix your leaking roof? In that case you have two real options:

1) Do it your self ideas

2) Find a new rental

If you plan to do it yourself, the first step would be to dry out the attic. I would get several fans and let them run through the attic. Once you have no moisture in the attic you can treat the area with a simple spray (mix 1 part bleach with 30 parts water) The spray will kill the mold while the fans will prevent spores from growing again. (You could also treat the mold first, then dry with fans) If you physically touch the mold you will run the risk the mold spreading… mold spores will become airborne if they are disturbed so be very careful not to disturb the mold if its present. You might even find that there is no mold in the attic. If that is true you can still run fans to make sure it is completely dry.

Mold needs moisture to thrive. Keeping your attic dry will stop or prevent further spread of mold. (Wear a mask when dealing with mold. They sell them at HomeDepot for a couple of dollars.)
