Looks like the oil spill ruined your vacation.  But you’re right, based on what you’ve mentioned the landlord is not able to keep your full prepaid rent amount.  Obviously, you have agreed to forfeit the deposit but that should be it.  

I’m guessing you are new to the RPA…  There’s no need to hire an expensive attorney to resolve this.  You can just file a complaint with the RPA and they will assign an agent to investigate to get your money back.  There is a minimal filing fee… can’t remember the actual amount– somewhere around $30.  Now that’s some pretty cheap legal service.  Here is a link to file your complaint: https://www.rentalprotectionagency.com/complaint_center_form.php
