Legal question regarding official “non-renewal of lease” – 30 day notice to vacate

By Gigi

Are there any legal remedies for a non-renewal of lease/30 day notice to vacate? We believe they are attempting to weasel their way out of a security deposit/last month’s rent issue – we paid it to the previous management company and present management company refuses to acknowledge the entire amount, even though we have receipts. They gave us a new lease less than a year ago, and we said we’d pay the raised rent and other new lease obligations in good faith until the deposit issue was settled, and we have. Yet in spite of offering us the lease in November 2012, and our continued payment of more rent than our previous lease stipulated, we just received a "non-renewal of lease" and 30 notice to vacate – reminding us, of course, that we were still obligated to pay rent in the meantime.

I don’t want to move, for one thing. We have been here nearly six years and it seems rather punitive that they do this, especially with a vacate date of August 10th. (The middle of the month, really?). The fact that we have nowhere to move is beside the point. We haven’t broken any rules, violated the lease in any way… I do complain about the sheer tonnage of dog crap around here, and within the past couple of weeks I mentioned I’d seen bugs in my kitchen and that my neighbor’s car was blocking me into my parking spot, but seriously…
Anyone have any advice? If it makes any sort of difference, they seem oblivious to the human concern here – it’s all about the buck. And though my relationship with the on-site manager has been great until now, he has refused to speak to me about this issue at all, after two requests for information.
