Also, I was going to mention that in the future if you ever need to rent a property again without first looking at it, you should at least attach an addendum that states you have the right to view the property before accepting the property. You can word it however you want. The lease addendum forms are provided for free on this site. I use them all the time. Just an FYI. There are still ways to protect yourself.

There's a big difference between rentals that are not liveable versus unacceptable. Based on what you mentioned above it sounds more like the rental unit was unacceptable, but not necessarily un-livable.

 Could you live there? Yes.
Would you die if you moved in? No.
Would there be any real major heath concerns? No.

So, the place is gross and disgusting but still livable. This comes into play with the "Buyer Beware" condition. Before signing anything, make sure you know what you're getting. I'm just glad you didn't sign a one year contract, then you'd really be stuck.

If the landlord misrepresented the rental, then I would suggest filing a complaint with the RPA. They might be able to get your deposit back for you.
