Roach Infestation

By Blythe Woods

I moved in a week ago to a trailer with a lease agreement. The mantience person didn’t start cleaning the place until the day before we moved in. The place was vacant for 3 months with food still in the refridgerator and oven. For the past week I have used combat roach bait in the cracks of the walls, dorr frames and other places. I have used arosol sprays and bug barrier inside and outside of the trailer. I have used a whole bottle of Broic acid under the refrigerator, stove, dryer, microwave, and cracks in walls. I am a pretty clean person but I have an 8 month old son and 4 cats. All fixed, shots and all use a litter box. I have cleaned the litter everyday. I have cleaned my kitchen and bathrooms everyday. Nothing so far is working to kill or contain the infestation of german cockroaches. Now that I have again confronted the managment about the problem, they tell me to use more of the same treatments I have been using. I feel they should pay for the fumagation of the place due to it sitting vacant and food occuping the stove for 3 months. I can not have my son live in a bug infestated dwelling. Is the landlord/management responsible for the pest removal?

Many of use experienced at least one bad thing as a tenant. Pest is one of the usual problems in a rental industry that often leads to a confrontation betweeen the tenant and the landlord. Now, most of the resources I found states that the landlord is the one who should correct this. However, it is also the tenant’s duty to make sure his or her apartment is clean. If the reason of the infestation is a dirty place then the landlord must make sure these infestations are corrected.
