There is a simple solution to your problem. As with any contract, your rental agreement is negotiable. Many times renters will sign the contract without any type of negotiation, however, you have every right to make conditions or special arrangements for your situation.
The problem is that the complex may not be willing to negotiate too much. They might say sorry, either you sign it or move.
What you can do is create a rental addendum. This site through the RPA has them for free... Type up an escape clause that is fair to you and your husband such as: Tenant is allowed to vacate premise with a 30 day written notice in the event of layoff or loss of employment.
Try that and see what happens.
