I moved into this new apartment last month & i started realizing this last past week i couldn’t BREATHE in the bedroom. little to my surprise there is black mold in three windows of the apartment. i am really allergic to mold. i have asthma which rarely acts up but i am nearly to the point of going to the ER for a asthma attack. i cough and sneeze and my lymph nodes are swollen. it’s horrible. plus, i have a one year old. i don’t want her getting sick!

i just want to move out! today i plan to tell the landlord about it, but i’m sure they will try to spray bleach on it and say it’s fine. which btw the mold is in the wood surrounding the window. not just ON it… it’s been there A LONG TIME. other apartments in the complex (i have noticed) have the same condensation problem so if they were to offer a new unit, i would probably have the same problem.

i signed a 6 month lease, there was no deposit. how do i try to get out of this lease without paying a break-lease fee????

We moved into a house in October to find out it had mold growing in the bathroom, our bedroom and probably other places. My husband, kids and myself all became very sick right after moving in. My husband was really sick, seeing a dr. almost once a week and I ended up in the ER. We have since moved out and my husband is much better but I am still dealing with weakness. We had to throw away some of our things due to the mold. Our question is, do we have a right to ask for restitution from our landlord for our lost items and medical bills. We are also concerned she will rent it again. Thanks

My friend just moved into an apartment that smells very mildewy and moldy carpet. There is also visible mold in all of the windowsills. The landlord had shampooed the carpets before my friend moved in, and there was no ventilation and OR is a wet state. I’m not sure if that is why the mold is there or not. But, my friend has asthma and is having a very hard time breathing when she is in the apartment. She contacted the landlord about it and the landlord said the only thing they can do for her is shampoo the carpets again. THIS WON’T HELP!! They won’t replace the carpet or let her out of her lease. It seems absurd that they can make her live there in those conditions. It seems a huge health concern. She has been to her asthma doctor and he has written a letter stating that she is in danger living in that apartment and needs to move. If anyone has any advice about how she can get out of the apartment right now without any serious repercussions, please help!!

I started renting, at Prentiss Creek Apartments in Downers Grove,IL, in March of 2006, and have been nothing short of a perfect tenant. I have payed rent always on time and always in full. In July of 2008 a leak had formed in the roof over the bedroom causing water to run inside the wall, which inturn caused mold to form on the ceiling and wall. I notified the management immedialy by phone and waited 1 week with no action on their part. I notified them again in person and brought it to their attention that I am allergic to mold and suffer from asthma. Once again I waited a week and again they took no action. The third time I went in I told them of their neglegence and demanded a maintenece man meet at my apt. immediatly. The maintenece manwalked in the bedroom looked at the ceiling and said “yep, you have a leak. We are going to have to get the roofing company to fix the roof and then the painters can fix the drywall.” NO ROOFERS OR PAINTERS EVER SHOWED UP! Now in Jan. 09′, after a management change, the window in the window in the living room started to leak, so I headed back to the office to complain about the window and remind them of the leak in the bedroom and the mold that has been forming. They sent a maintenence man who said the same thing as before exept now we have to wait for the snow to melt before the roofers can do any repair. 2 weeks later no repair done, what a suprise. I have now had several asthma attacks and constant allergic reactions to this moldy mess, and just want out of this lease. It expires April 09′, and the complex manager refused to release me and refused to give me their insurance information. I have sent a letter to PRG Management Co., the new owners, and have contacted the village Housing Dept., I am now getting deprate, the mold has had nothing but time to grow and cause me serious distress. Does anyone have any advice? I am a full time employee and a part time student and dont have much money to hire a lawyer. Is there anything else i can do?

I rented an apt in November and started having serious headaches and sinus trouble. It would clear up when I went out for the day but become a major problem when i stayed in the apt all day long. My daughter supected mold, I notified the management and the resident manager and maintenance man came and looked over the apt, pulled back some wallpaper, checked the attic and so forth and found no problems. They sent the maintenance back about a week later to pull the A/C unit. These apts have individual A/C units like you would find in a hotel room. He pulled the unit and moldwas growing on the wallpaper behind the unit. He took a bottle of bleach and sprayed it on the wallpaper and took the unit out and cleaned it with a shopvac and cleaned the filters and replaced the unit. I am still having problems. I feel terrible and don’t want to live here – what should I do?

We have rented a home for two years. Over the course of the two years, lots of maintenance issues have cropped up that were covered up, either cosmetically or with a band-aid solution. Most of these issues arise from a greater moisture problem in several areas of the house.

Long story short, a skylight that has been leaking for the duration of our tenancy — which we have asked many times to be repaired — is growing toxic mold, both on the wall and on the inside of the wall, in the attic. Also, the basement — which looked clean and freshly painted when we moved in — has bloomed all over with mold from under the paint. We had the attic mold tested and it came back as Stachybotrys, heavy growth. Several of our things in the basement have been completely ruined; we had to throw out a car seat and a box full of hardcover books because they became moldy. A neighbor told us that a previous tenant had complained of mold.

My landlord has avoided all of my messages since this mold issue cropped up and I had the mold tested. I am furious because I think she knowingly rented us a moldy house, knowing we have very small children. Our state has no regulations on mold. I’m not sure where to turn. I think ultimately, we have to move, but moving expenses are going to kill our savings, and I had no intention of having to move again after only two years. Our lease expired in October, I told her I did not want to renew it without repairs being made or the rent being dropped, after which we didn’t hear from her again. (We’re still paying the previously agreed upon rent.)

I have no idea what to do here. Suggestions?
