Lost – how do i accomodate someone who is now injured and is on the top floor

By Joey Rigiano

I have a tenant who was recently injured and is on the top floor and I do not have an elevator – the tenant is asking what I can do to help her get down the stairs – do I need to do anything – can I just have her move into another apartment on the 1st floor and if so, do I need to move her since she can’t move anything right now. What am I required to do?

Any suggestions?

The disabilities act will most likely not effect your building, unless you have a major apartment complex. However, just because the disabilities act may not effect your rentals I would still suggest working with the tenant if you can.
Your suggestion about moving her to a lower level is a great idea. This will help accomodate your tenants disability. If the law applies to you it will require you to accomodate the disabled tenant the best you can. You will not need to worry about moving or paying to have the tenant moved. As long as you are accomodating her by providing a lower unit, you are covered. I suggest working with the tenant to help her with her stressfull situation, but don’t feel like you have to lose money due to her mis fortune.
