Landlord did not disclose a cockroach problem with the previous tenant

Have been having all kinds of issues with my landlord in Iowa City.  Apartment was not ready for me to move in when my lease started (needed to be painted, doors off, A/C broken) and he refused to give me a rent credit.  He also made a fuss when I asked him to paint since it was needed (he eventually did).  Also, the apartment was never cleaned and I had to do so myself for several hours.  I was under the assumption that when a tenant does not clean when he moves out (and basically forfeits his security deposit) that the landlord is responsible for hiring cleaning people to get the apartment in liveable shape for the next tenant.  This never happened. 

My main issue is cockroaches.  It was never disclosed that there was a "bug problem" with the previous tenant.  It was only after I mentioned I had seen roaches that he mentioned that there was a "bug problem" with the previous tenant.  Do I have any legal rights here to end the lease?
