Damages
By Melissa
I recently moved out of my 2 bedroom apartment. There was some damage to a bedroom carpet and wall/trim that my cat scratched. I accepted responsibility for those. Last week I received a notice from my landlord that shows that everything that is wrong in the apartment, they are charging me for. Things that were pre-existent. One problem, I did not take before and after pictures of the apartment, but I do have 4 people who helped me move that can prove that those damages did not exist. I am not sure what course of action I should take to counteract my landlord’s claim. Not only are these damages that I did not create, but the charges are extremely inflated. One claim is that the toilet seat is broken. All of my helpers saw that the toilet seat was not broken and the landlord is charging $45 for it. I wondered if I should file a complaint against them, see a lawyer, or go to small claims. Any ideas?
