Carpet Repair after Move-Out

I am being charged for carpet replacement throughout the unit due to pet stains. I had a pet there for 1 month. the dog was older and had been house trainded for years with no mistakes. I am fairly confident that these stains are stains that resubmerged from the under carpet padding. I was given an invoice that showed that the carpet was replaced before my move in but the padding was not. The carpet has been since replaced andn disposed of so I cannot prove that those stains were not my dog. Are the landlords required to show me receipts of these repairs to ensure that I am not being charged for things that were not performed? I cannot afford a lawyer so how would I effectively dispute these charges if I can show that the padding was not replaced and could be the source of the stains?
