can a new landlord demand a reference from current problem landlord

By randall

I have a dispute with my landlord who wants me out, and i have applied to housing trusts for tenancys with them but they want a reference from my current landlord even though i have explained the problems im having with him ie he is trying to use my home as a place to drink and when i refuse him he threatens to throw me out , so i dont want them to contact him as this would cause me more grief from him and he would not give a reference anyway so is there any way around giving a reference from my current landlord where i have been for 3 years
