can i have bags on my windows

I am in my apartment and im trying to keep the light out, they told me i couldnt have them on but i need to sleep i work over 45 hrs a week and its hard to sleep . Am i allowed to do this , the landlord says take it down it looks tacky …thats all he said i couldnt put them up just my curtens..what is my right ..can i do this
