Can landlord lie about an agreement ?

By Tenant

I’ve been renting this apartment for a year or so. When the year was due, they (the landlord) offered me to stay and they was going to reduce my rent and let me move out whenever just with a 30 days notice. Well, i want to move now, but apparently the switch from management and the deal that was made with me was off. Now that i want to move they are charging me for breaking a lease and a couple of other silly charges like re-marketing fee. I just feel that they can do whatever they want with people and then just charge for any silly thing they want. I always paid on time !!!! Now, what to do ? Where is my deposit ? Just be on top of everything and dont sign nothing if your not sure !!!!

The truth is that if the contract you made with the previous landlord is verbal– then it doesn’t apply to new owners. This is why it is SO important to put everything in writing. In fact, in my rental contact there is a specific paragraph that states that all agreements must be made in writing and that any verbal or implied arrangement is not applicable unless signed by both me and the tenant.
As for the deposit, that would have transfered from the old landlord to the new one. But, from what it sounds like they are saying you are in breach of your rental contract and ending your lease. If that is the case, you will probably lose your deposit.
Most likely you will need to get the RPA involved, or hire an attorney. Here’s the link to the RPA Complaint Center: http://www.rentalprotectionagency.com/complaint_center.php
