Can my lanlord do this?

By Barbara Johnson

Hi. My husbad and I are renting a condo. We recwently found out that my parents have fallen ill and need to be cared for. We have to move to New Jersey to care for them. We are leaving 7 months before our lease is up. I contacted my lanlord let him know the situation. he said that we will not only lose our security deposit but have to pay him for two more months of rent and pay his realtors fee, if not more. i am going to request a copy of our lease to go over the details. i thought a security deposit was there for that reason. if a tenant leaves before the lease agreement is up, or is evicted from the property then they loose the security deposit;which i understand. but all this extra money i don’t think is fair. i don’t want to be taken advantage of and i feel that may be case…please help

can my lanlord do this?

By Michelle

HELLO, I have rented a duplex for over a yr now. I have recently discovered that we share a sump pump that is in my half of the basement. The sump pump is were all of the washer and their utility sink drains as well as mine. The problem i have with this is that my electric is the one that is charged to use the sump pump. I know the electric usage is probally very minimal to operate. But this has been for almost a yr and a half. My landlord did not inform me of this when i signed the lease. I feel this is unfair. With electric bills sky high regardless, I dont feel that i should be charged for this on my bill. We have seperate utility bills, so they should have their own pump. By law can the landlord do this?

Thank You
