Have Bed Bugs – Need to know rights

By jjauxier

My family recently moved into a new home.  I immediately began to get bites on my arms and legs.  At first, I thought it was an allergic reaction to something or mosquito bites since we moved from the city to the country.  There were curtains that were already hanging in the bedroom where I sleep.  One night, I went to open them and discovered many dead bug bodies in the folds of the curtains.  After doing some research, to my horror, I discovered they were bed bugs.  We immediately notified our landlord.  We were given insecticide and basically told to take care of this ourselves.  Since we did not bring the bed bugs in and they were already there, I want to know my rights and how to make them hire a professional to exterminate the bugs.  I’m getting a feeling that they are going to be reluctant to hire a professional.  My husband and I are freaking out.  He has already spent hours cleaning, vacuuming, spraying, etc.  We feel we should be compensated for the many hours of cleaning he did.  I don’t even want to go into my bedroom and now I’m afraid they will spread and infest all of our stuff.  Please help with some advise.
