Help

By Erica

I have lived in my apartment for 3 months now and everything is wrong! We caught 7 mice in the month of July, my ac leaks badly, maintenance took my satellite down without any notice after saying I could place it where I did, my windows were suppose to be replaced before we moved an and haven’t been yet(you can hardly see out of them because they are so old and there is so much humidity in the apartment from water leaks, also today I realized the fridge is leaking. I notified them about these problems on July 5th and nothing is being done! What are my options, or a way to get them to react?

HELP!

By anonymous

Hi. I really need your advice. I just moved into this new apartment complex about 4 months ago and a couple weeks into my move, I started having rashes and painful itching. Like everyone else, I suspected mosiquitos or hives. But it was too many bites to be mosiquotes and I never really had any allergic reactions to be hives, so I did some research online and suspected bed bugs. During my search, I initially found your site and I immediately started the process on filing the claim. I notified the property manager and they sent out a pest control agency and said that they cleared my apartment, meaning I did not have any bed bugs and did a general spray of the apartment, so I dropped my claim. Well, I was still getting bitten and all the signs were still there: the blood smears on the sheets and pillows and the continuous bites. I finally decided that my mission was to collect my evidence. I must have collected over 10 "bed bugs" and wrote another complaint to the property manager. They stated that they already cleared my apartment so I should bring the bag of bugs to the office. They looked at it and they suspected bed bugs. They called another exterminator out (bed bug specialists, so they say) to do another inspection. The apartment complex called me and said that they found bugs but they were not bed bugs and sprayed another spray to get rid of the "other type of bug", which, by the way, was the same company that came out initially and not a different company. Anyway, it is one in the morning and I am covered in bites with five "bugs" in a plastic bag, two of them bright red after feeding from my flesh (I suspect). If these are not bed bugs, they are still sucking the living daylights out of me and if they are bed bugs and the exterminators that my apartment complex has sent out have not identified them as bed bugs, what else can I do? Can I go out myself and get them identified by another expert and have them report it to my property manager?? Would they purposely not identify the bed bugs because they don’t want to spend the money on the treatment? I want to break my lease, but if they are not treated, they will just follow me to my new home. I am loosing sleep in this inhospitable environment and now have added two more bugs to my collection since the start of my complaint. HELP!

What i did when I got infested with bedbugs is that I threw my stuff away. It will only get worst as time passes by. I also filed a complaint here and they talked to my landlord about really doing an in and out insect extermination. Maybe you could try it too.

I live in an apt with 2 other girls and a guy. We’re all on separate leases. About 3 months ago, we discovered the guy was a raging alcoholic and he would get verbally aggressive and yell at us and use his size ( he’s 6’3 and about 300lbs ) in a menacing way. He even got aggressive with our landlord, who lives above us. She amended his lease saying if he drank or caused any problems that he would be evicted. Since then, we’ve found hidden bottles of alcohol, he yells at us from behind his closed door if we make noise, and the newest incident is that my roomate had almost $200 stolen from her when, conveniently, we found a notice of interruption for our DWP service that he had hidden in his room.
When we approached our landlord about all of this, she did a complete 180 and said simply "it’s a roomate issue, Im not getting involved. Any of you are welcome to leave if you’d like (break our leases)". This coming from a woman 4 months before saying she wanted us to feel "safe" and to let her know if we ever don’t.
Does she really have no responsibility to keep 3 girls safe from an unpredictable addict when she knows there’s been prior issues? I’ve lived here for 6 years, and I’ve never had a roomate make me feel unsafe and like I’ve had to hide my belongings.. I don’t want to move, I love my apt!

Did you inform your landlord about this roommate of yours? If you did and nothing was ever done then you can file a complaint against your landlord. You can either file your complaint through your local county or through a mediation company like the RPA. What ever your choice is the complaint will be the best thing you can do right now. Good Luck!

I pay $950 a month for my rent. My rent is paid on time each month. My landlord refuses to fix anything in the home because he feels as though he would be losing out if he paid to fix things. The stove catches on fire. The heating/cooling system does not work. The plumbing is bad in one restroom (only cold water runs). The doors have not been put up………etc. I have several letters from the Home Association saying that the house is out of compliance. What should I do??? Should I hold my rent??? How many days before I have to move out??? Thanks!

Hi Yams, you have the right to Minor Repairs. Your landlord is responsible for keep your place in a livable condition. Your landlord needs to make sure that the structure of the building is in a convenient condition these includes the stove, the heating.cooling system, and as well as the plumbing. If you are not sure if the repair is to be handled by you or by the landlord, you need to check if your complaint is addressed by the terms of your lease, any oral or written promises your landlord has made, or any codes like state and local building codes or state landlord-tenant laws. Here’s some tips for you to do on how to make your landlord make those minor repairs, 1. Write a repair request, it will give you a chance to articulate the problem clearly and point out why it’s his interest to get these things fixed. 2.) propose mediation, if your oral and written approach were ignored then contact a mediation service which will invite the landlord to meet with you and a trained mediator. You can also 3. report your landlord to your local building or housing agency. Hope this helps you. :)
