how much can the apartment charge for running rental credit check?

By angry renter

I’ve lived in this apartment for over 3 years in a 2 bedroom. My roommate moved out recently, and I found a new one to move in. The apartment is charging $75 for rental credit check of my newroommate, and would not provide any written explaination to why this amount is charged and how it will be spent. The apartment manager said this policy has been in place for a long time, but would not give any writtern document. They claim if I didn’t go through this porcess and let my new roommate move in, I will be legally charged. Is it legal for them to charge $75 without any written notice? Can they really seek legal action against me?

Thanks!

Hello there! The charge seems to high for a credit check. They may have the right to ask for fees but you are right about the paper work or documentation regarding this. If they push you towards paying such amount, you can file a complaint about this situation here atr RPA through http://www.rentalprotectionagency.com/complaint_center.php or if not file a lawsuit for this.
