Increasing Rent

I currently find myself caught up in a difficult situation and would like to know if it may be possible to gain some advice on the issue.

I signed a lease for an apartment in West Virginia on August the fourth, 2009. The lease is one year in length and terminates on August 31th 2010.

The lease states:

"IT IS HEREBY FURTHER MUTUALLY UNDERSTOOD AND AGREED that the tenant is to have possession of said premises can reduce the terms of this lease by giving a thirty (30) days written notice prior to vacating, by surrendering his damage deposit, and by submitting his forwarding address; provided that his rent is current.
All damages are due and payable in addition to the forfeited damage deposit. Landlord or tenant may terminate this lease at the end of the term by giving the
other party at least thirty (30) days prior written notice but if no such notice is given, the term of this agreement shall be extended on the same terms and conditions on a month to month basis until terminated by either party upon a full month’s written notice.
In accordance with West Virginia Law a full month being from the first day of the month to the last day of that month."

I have not given my landlord notice or will I do so, as I do not intend to move out of the apartment.

On July 31, I was sent a notice by my landlord that rent will be increasing for the next year. I am given 10 days to agree to this and sign, or vacate the apartment on the 1st of September.

Although my current lease states that the identical terms and conditions will be extended on a month to month basis, my landlord plans to increase rent by 30 dollars per month. As such, I feel that this is somewhat irregular as it seems to contradict the terms of my current lease. 

I’d like to know if there are any options for me as far as this issue is concerned. What is my standing on the issue, and do I have any legal standing to dispute the matter?

I’m unsure of what my options are and would appreciate any advice or expertise you can offer, or if you can direct me to the appropriate area or persons to contact on the matter.
