Landlord Imposing Inconveniences

By Lou

I rent a room in a townhouse. The owner made it clear that I can use anything in the common areas because she did not want me to bring in my pots/pans, silverware, dishes, microwave, etc. On the contract, which she went out of her way to get notarized, under "Kitchen Use" she indicates as follows:  Tenant has permission to use stove top, tabletop oven, microwave, assigned areas of the refrigerator, food storage (except plastic bags), pots, pans, silverware, plates, glasses, cups, etc. The kitchen is a galley kitchen and space is limited.

Under "Other" it states: Kitchen items-Tenant must purchase her own salt/pepper, milk, beverages, food, etc. Tenant has full use of the kitchen.

First of all, she waits until I am in the kitchen and she starts preparing her meals having both of us bumping into each ot her and constantly saying "excuse me" to one another. So now I ask her if she is done cooking and has eaten her dinner before I attempt to make something to eat, but she still waits until I am in the kitchen and either pretends to be doing something, or starts cutting up fruits. If items are not as cleaned afterwards as she would like it to be, she posts a note on it and states she does not want me to use it. When asked what could be an alternative to use, as in the blender, for example, she shrugs her shoulders because she purchased a Bullit blender for herself and it is also off limits. As soon as I mention I will bring my own blender, she states that space is limited. She does the same with the little bit of groceries that I get. She will not provide space for fruits and vegetables or a carton of milk. The same has been slowly done with the small pantry space. When I explained that I needed to eat and that I had to have a little more space, she told me to purchase a refrigerator and then posted a computer generated letter stating that the rent went up because I want more cooling space and pantry space. She complains about tedious things, including the position of the silverware in the dishwasher, as an example. If I had the money today, I would move tomorrow. I feel the woman is not only OCD, but has many disorders that she does not want to admit or discuss, as in always watching me from her window in hiding while I check the mailbox, and demanding anything I use back immediately, including a coffee cup she chased me for. She gets caught in lies and is used to being alone eventhough she wants to cling and tag along in whatever I am planning to do. To the point where I no longer inform her of my itinerary. I now have to go out of my way to purchase a small refrigerator, a few pots and pans and some silverware, as well as a blender. It is becoming more and more inconvenient, not to mention that I have to carry what I need to cook with and use, from upstairs to the downstairs where the kitchen is located. There is now no diningroom table and chairs or sofa in the livingroom. It has been taken over by two huge cages with the noisiest birds I’ve ever heard. The ad she placed for the room included cable and she stated when I came in that she would have the basic installed the following month. It is now four months and when I asked about it, she stated she was not going to connect it, only her t.v. and that if I want cable, I would have to have it installed and pay for it. She has done the total opposite of what is on the "contract."

I understand what you are feeling right now Melissa. I once shared an apartment with my landlord and it is really very frustrating. I do not have enough space to move my stuff in and I have no privacy. The best thing you could do is to get out and find another apartment to rent. Also specifically include in your written notice that you want to get your full security back. Good luck!
