My home has been sold to new landlord

By Claire Singer

Hi,

My home is a guest house on a larger property, and the whole property has been sold. The contracts will be exchanged in early August.

I’m friendly with the old landlord, and so I have enjoyed a great rent. In exchange, I have always done my own repairs. We did not have any paperwork in place at all, everything is informal. There is no tenancy agreement.

The new landlord would like to keep me here, but wants to raise my rent a LOT. from $240 per month to $900 per month!!

It’s a little wooden shack in the mountains, I love it because it’s cute and rustic, but it really seems a lot of money that they’re asking, and it’s unrealistic in my budget to accommodate this massive change…

What can I do?? I don’t want to have to move, but I can’t afford this huge rent increase!

Thank you,
Claire
