my landlord billed me $1600 after i moved out

By danielle

i moved out of my rental home a month ago. today i received a letter billing my 2 roomates and myself $550 a piece. He billed us for lawn mowing, carpet cleaning, cleaning supplies, maintenance supplies, early termination fee and so on. someone tried to break in to our house while we were home so we decided we didnt feel safe living there anymore. we found subleasers and called the landlord to tell him. he said not to worry about subleasers and he would let us out of the lease. 2 days later he called up the subleasers and had an interview with them. when we had our first walk through we were told he would fix the leaky faucets, the backed up drains, the garage door, he would put carpet in the basement…. none of which ever happened.

the first part of our lease says that it is for 6 months from january 1st to december 31st. which is it? we terminated our lease at 6 months. he is taking us to small claims court for not paying the $1600 on top of that he is keeping our $1200 deposit. help!!!!
