problem with previous landlord

By anonymous

I was renting a house from this privae landlord who always seemed offended when I would call her to let her know of the problems I was having renting her house.  She made a verbal statement and a written statement that it seemed that she could never please me.  They never responded within 24 hours, and was always on time to pick up rent except when I informed her that I was moving and I wanted her to prorate rent for Septermber 2010 because I would only be staying in her house for 14 days.  On 9/15, i did a walk thru with her husband and she told him to get a check from me in the amount of 425.  I had a check for 14 days.  He would not accept it or the key.  I called and called and no one returned my call.  I even sent a certified letter with $425 rent and their key.  They never picked it up from the post office.  She kept my deposit for rent for september and i didn’t stay  there for the month. Is that legal.  I always thought they had to provide you with an itemized statement of repairs beyond normal wear and tear.  I had a small pet and she wet the carpet in my bedroom and in the living room and they gave me a quote of $300 to have the total house cleaned.  I don’t agree with that.  Any advice or help…
