Security Deposit Problem

By Yvette Martinez

Hello,

I have a problem with my former landlord he kept my whole security deposit and is saying I owe $120.17.  I lived in that apartment for over a year and they used my whole deposit of $1,265.00 to redue the apartment. They repainted the whole apartment doe $625.00 and are charing me for half and they recarpted the whole place and are charging me the full amount of $875.00 plus $130.00 in trash fees. I have written a letter to my former landlord demanding my full deposit back since they violated the 21 day policy and other california tenant laws. I want to file a complaint with the city but I don’t know how to go about it. I am also thinking of taking the landlord to small claims if he refuses. Please help me!! I need to know who I should contact or if I should send a copy of the letter to anyone?

Thank you so much,

Yvette Martinez

It’s really tough to go through with a deposit issue. A detailed breakdown of those should be provided to you, were you able to get those? You can file a complaint through RPA. A dedicated agent will help you out with this. Also it’s still a good option to talk personally to the landlord and try to resolve the matter.
