We have bed bugs, what can we do?

By Chicago

My roommate and I moved into our apartment 3 months ago, and now we almost certainly have bed bugs. Shortly after we moved in, she began to ocassionally get small bites on her body while sleeping. This went on until 3 weeks ago, when we both started getting more numerous bumps on our bodies which has gotten progressively worse. I am planning to see a doctor asap, but we\’re pretty sure it\’s bed bugs. We live in Chicago, IL. What rights do we have as rentors, if any, to require our landlord to pay any or all of the cost to exterminate?

I am sorry to hear about the possibility of bedbugs in your apartment. Yes, go ahead and see a doctor to confirm. Have you also informed your landlord about it? Your landlords needs to know of the possible presence of the bedbugs because under the Illinois Department of Health, it is the landlord’s responsibility to coordinate and contract the bedbug control and treatment in rentals. This is, of course, given that you did not bring the bedbugs in. Anyway, that will be determined by the professional exterminator who can determine how long the bedbugs have been in the apartment. If your landlord does not cooperate and refuses to help you out with your bedbug problem, you can file a formal complaint against him. The RPA has a complaint center that you can access. However, I hope it does not come to that and your landlord decides to just help you out. Good luck!
