who deals with slum lord issues, city, or county offices??

By forest lake, MN

Instances of intermittent garbage pickup, no hot water for 2 day periods,  no longer pick up grounds, security doors no longer up to code, fire doors left unlocked and open,  general disregard to interior and exteriors’ of a place just 5 years ealier was a great place to live.  The owners have been written about in the news papers and reported about on the evening news, they are more concerned about spending their income from seven different rental properties in the twin cities/MN area on their own  luxury cars and high-end homes in exclusive Oak Hieghts , then pay the bills that effect the renters and the buildings they live in.   The parking lots are full of large deep pot holes,  no heat in the winter, applicances are 22 years old and starting to fail, mold rapant in some units, ect.,ect.  Since they purchased this site(3 builds), they’ve raised rent twice in 2 years and don’t bother to fix a thing.  Where can a concerned renter go to have their opinions heard, city or county offices which deal with these sorts of issues??

You can file a complaint through RPA to resolve your problem.

Trust me, unless you’re some type of welfare recipient there isn’t any local city or government entity to assist with landlord tenant issues. I had once assumed that’s what the Housing Authority was; but its not. That’s just the program to pay rent for poor people. They don’t handle any landlord complaints. Finally, after talking to the city I was told that if I had a problem with a landlord that I would need to take them to court. They told me all landlord tenant disputes are considered civil manner in which the city doesn’t get involved. I actually filed a complaint with the Rental Protection Agency. It cost me $35 plus $18 for signature delivery; but it resolved my problem and prevented me from having to go to court with my landlord. As someone above mentioned… you can file a complaint with the RPA (on this site) or take your landlord to court. Those are your options.
