landlord harassing me with late fees

Hi,
Here’s my situation: I signed a lease for six month period and never received a full copy of the lease. They just handed me the first two pages of the lease. So I was unsure of the amount I needed to pay, so instead of the first of january i paid rent on the second and the management charged me $10 dollar late fee. the office was closed on the first and i even went to the office on the first jan to pay however no one was around, when I told them this, they told me I should have put the check through the window. Is this fair?
Any suggestions welcome,

1. One of the challenges is with the tenant check process. Large properties may have access to the information and reports required to make a decision but small property owners and independent landlords may have limited access.
