AmbASSador

I welcome feedback here!  This is what I’ve experienced.  I entered into a verbal arrangement with a 44-yr old man who was the only remaining tenant in a 3 Br Townhome in an upscale neighborhood in Pasadena, CA.  I was told the cost for my room would be $1000/mo including utilities and that the other rooms were already spoken for.  I was told that the landlord had changed hands and that someone from the new agency should be getting involved soon.  In the meantime, he,  the present tenent, had permission to allow renters to move in, collect rent/security & rental applications.  I agreed and promptly moved in under the agreement that I’d be a shared tenant with access to all common areas of the townhome.

I was oblivious in my happiness in my new surroundings and was offput when my male roommate started approaching me with little requests to keep my dogs rconfined to my room when I wasn’t home, estrained while in the house even if I was home, and to move small furiture items and daily use items from common areas to my room.  I started to feel uncomfortable and that he was having difficulties with the new "shared" arrangement.  I confided in my other roommates.

I quickly found out something quite disturbing and confronted my male roommate about the division of the total rent.  He confirmed that the total rent was $3000/mo.  I pay $1000, another female pays $1000, the 3rd pays $775 which . . . let’s do the math . . . leaves him with his portion for his Br with own bath at $225!  I just feel like the man is trying to live there for next to nothing AND wants to retain "control" over the house rules, appearance and overall decision-making.  He later told me that he had spent his retirement money on rent for previous months when he occupied the townhome alone and now that he is "pennyless", is trying to recoup some of his money through this arrangement!

He told me the landlord gave him the right to sublease in this manner.  Me?  I’m not so sure I believe him now.  I don’t know who my landlord even is or if he even cares about me at this point.  I may have to move AGAIN!
