Bed Bug infestation

By Helpless Renter

My friend moved into my apartment a couple of months back and brought bed bugs with him.I complained about the bed bugs to the management but they were very slow at responding. Some irregular follow ups were done after the first treatment  by Orkin but that did not solve the problem of bedbug. Then, to my surprise the whole management changed and I rasied my concern to them. They saw my apartment and asked the Orkin people to come and inspect for bed bugs. Orkin was not very good at treatment and finally put all the blame on me. I do not have any furniture to start with. Now my question is can I be served an eviction notice to vacate the apartment as I am being held responsible for infesting the neighbouring apartments. My friend who was the cause of infestation stayed with me for 3 months and added him to the lease . However, after discovering the bed bug issue, I took him off from the lease and asked him to leave. Now the problem is I am going to bear all the expenses and legal proceedings esp eviction notice for no fault of mine. Can this be avoided in anyway?. I would not be able to rent the apartment in future if I get an eviction notice. Please help.

Bed Bug Infestation

By Tenant

My roommate and I just moved into a new apartment 3 weeks ago and have discovered bed bugs in one of our bedrooms. We found out that the people who lived in this apartment before us had a problem with bed bugs about five months ago and did not seak professional help. They also did not inform the landlord of the issue based on our landlord’s reaction when we informed him of this news. Our landlord told us that we are responsible for removing the bed bugs but we do not think we were the ones who brought them into the apartment since we just moved in. We just want to know if we need to pay the 100’s-1000’s of dollars to remove them.
