Can a Landlord do this?

 I moved out of my last place July 15th or so, along with 2 other people. Our lease was not up until July 30. I wasn’t sure if the landlord had a forwarding address, so the last day that we were all in the house, I left a note on the counter with our forwarding address. Someone had obviously gotten it because left over mail was sent to the address. In about mid August I started contacting the landlord about making sure she had everything to give us our security deposit. I knew that she legally had until August 31st since we had the lease until July 30. However, I sent numerous emails, text and phone calls, but she never responded. I even sent facebook message. Another tentent during this time period also called and emailed numerious times. He didn’t get a respond either. Then on Sept 12 I sent her an email to her work email saying that legally she was past due on the security deposit and past due on notices of why we did not get our security deposit. She then responded with the fact that one of us (me) had not turned in a key. That she would not give us our remaining deposity unitl she got all the keys. I told her she only gave us two and that I had one made. My question to you is, can she take out money for not haveing the last key turned in until Septmeber, Even if she didn’t tell us this issue until well past her 30 days? If so how much can she take out? Can she take out other deductions from the deposit now if she hadn’t sent a letter stating what things she was takeing out of the deposit? This is a huge concern of mine because I have other tenets on my back about this being my fault. Where can I find written laws about this? Thanks. Oh and i’m from SC.

Good afternoon I hope you can give me some advice, I lived in a condo for about 7 years when i first got the apartment I gave them two months of security.  In November 2010 I had a family emergency my grandmother was in her last stage of cancer and was declared to hospice.  I was devesated and to make matters worse she had no money for the burial so we all had to chip in for the expenses.  So i decided to move with her to take care of her until her passing, So notificed the tenenat agency in the third week of November that I will be moving, they got completely angry and told me that they started legal action on me to have me evicted.  I was confused because to my knowledge I have two months of security to cover.  Sadly to say my grandmother passed away on December 3, 2010 and I took the time to send the property management a letter informing them that I will be vacating the premises before December 31, 2010.  I did vacate the premises on December 19, 2010.  Know they called me today and told me that I owe them $1,300.00 for legal fee’s can someone tell me what I should do.  I’m confused.  I told them that we would have to go to court to resolve this issue.  Is this legal?  I thought that the tenant had 30 days by law to let the landlord know that they were moving out.  Now they have me in collection and I dont know why.  I lived in the apartment for 1 month and half  and paid for 2 months security. Please help?

I have been living in a rental for the past ten years, and continuosly have issue with the rental, but affraid to complain because I can’t afford to have the rent go up any more. My question is if you have the option of using a gas dryer or electric should that options be available for the tenant to make.? My electric dryer finally died and I knew that there was an available gas line for the dryer, so I got a gas dryer this time, and as I come to find out the gas company said that its not a working line and red tagged it. The cost to put in a gas line will cost a pretty penny which I know the landlord will not do, but is it not my right to have the option of the two.  Gas is way cheaper than electric.

I live in hopkinsvilel ky, i moved into a new house october 13, 2010 and i signed a 1YR lease. I get a phone call today jan.8 and he said he was selling the house and giving me a 45 day notice. Can he do this?

basically after some investigation, i found out that someone has also been using my electricity, now at first my landlord tried denying this until i called my electric company and got to the bottom of things, my issue is i want this  guy off my meter ( or w.e im on that determines power for my apartment) and my landlord is pretty much telling me to deal with it, that he will just have the guy reimburse me, which hasnt happened because hes a drunk, i really dont think hes even supposed to be living there since its pretty much a spot in the basement. What should i do about this to get my money back and get this straightened out so im not being billed for someone elses apartment?

     Is it legal for a landlord to charge more than the current market rent (the rent charged to new renters) to renters who are renewing their lease?

   can a landlord charge a renewing tenant more than market rent (the amount that a new person moving in) just because you renewed your lease?

I started renting a duplex in July and when we moved in the place was not clean so the landlord said I could move in and he would  reduce the rent by $100.00 for that month. I had prepaid rent for the month and moved in July 9th. I have two dogs and the landlord had known about this. I paid a deposit for the dogs and a monthly rent for both. Right away the neighbor confronted me that she did not like dogs. From that point I had problems with her. She knocked on my door with a hammer while I was moving stuff in because she wanted to park in the drive way. We had arranged parking to suit both of us and I had told her I would be moving things in. Due to her threatening me I called the cops and they did nothing about the situation. I called the landlord but since he works out of town he could not do anything about the problem. A few days later I had another problem with the neighbor when she would stand outside with a large stick in her hand whenever I let my dogs outside. She then threatened me again and said she would beat my dog. I was over by my door and in the back yard away from her. My dogs were always leashed and being watched by me. At this point she sat in a chair in front of my door with a stick yelling things about how I would be hurt if I didn’t leave. I then called the cops again because of her threatening me. They said once again it was my landlords problem to take care of it. That night I come home from work and find two skinned squirrels on my steps. I called the cops but yet again they couldn’t do anything. I did not feel safe there anymore and got ahold of the landlord to set up a time to talk. He came over and talked with me. I let him know that I didn’t feel safe and wanted to move. He stated that they were trying to get her evicted but would not be able to for 30 days. I told them I was not staying there due to the issues already and still wanted to move so I could be safe. I had signed a lease but at that time they said they would put the property up on Craigslist.com. With in a few days I was moved and I had called to talk to him to try and discuss a time to turn in the keys. However he did not return any of my calls and did not post the ad like he said he would. He never returned my phone calls and did not respond to my emails until a few weeks later.  I went to leave my keys at the duplex at the end of the month but the locks had already been changed. I emailed him to let him know I left the keys and asked about the returning of my deposit. I did not hear anything from him for another month in which I received a letter stating I would get another letter after accounting matters had been figured out. Now 3 months later he has sent me a letter stating I owed for 2 months of rent even though I did not have keys and even though I wasn’t staying there. What do I do?
