Can my landlord prohibit sex offenders from registering?

By Belisa

Here’s a serious concern that I have about my apartment complex. After moving into my apartment complex I decided to check online one day to see if there were any convicted sex offenders living in the apartments. There were none listed. This was several months ago. So a couple of days ago I was talking to a resident (a father of three small children) who informed me that the property manager told him there IS a resident who lives in our complex who has a past conviction of child molestation.  So I went back online to check the registry again. Still no listing at our address (or even on our street.)  I went back to our (*cough* 20-page) lease and re-read the Crime-Free Addendum. This is what it says:

"No person, including but not limited to Resident or any Affiliated Person, shall register the address of the leased premises on any list of registered sex offenders or predators or similar compilation."

Now, what I’m wondering is… how is this legal?!? Aren’t sex offenders required by law to register??!?

I intend to contact the city regarding this on Monday, but I’m so fired up right now I just wanted to see if I could get some answers right away!

Thanks!
