Carpet replacement charges after moveout -Debt

By AB

Hi, I was living in manchester CT in a rental appartment last year, i rented for 1 year lease but i had to move out after 4 months, i gave proper notice and 2 months lease breakage rent. After i moved out they charged me for replacement of carpet saying it had stains. They kept my security deposit and also again asing some amount on top of it, they put it to the collector agency. What I can do to defend those charges ?

Please advice
