I HATE MY LANDLORD!!!

By Sandy

I LOVE HATE MY LANDLORD!

My landlord is so rude!  (I should warn you first that I am venting!!!)  I can’t believe how rude he can be.  He recently came over this morning to tell me that he wants to charge me $100 because I had someone stay overnight– JUST ONE NIGHT!!!  He siad they were not authorized to stay so he is going to charge me a fee.

Can my landlord charge me a fee for having someone stay with me?  Since when do landlord’s get to say who can visit.  This is just dumb, I AM FREAKIN MAD.  I really really HATE this landlord.  I feel like the jerk is watching my every move.

What can I do?   Grrrrrr.

Your landlord can’t charge you for that! I bet he’s just being mean.

Not exactly sure about Utah rent laws, but I would say that the laws would be similar. This type of a fee is actually regulated by the lease agreement and not by laws. I would suggest looking through the rental agreement just to make sure there aren’t any agreements stating such a fee per un authorized guest. This is actually a common charge, however, it usually applies after the guest has stayed for more than 5 days or so.
Check out your agreement.

I just want to say that I hate my landlord too. What’s with your landlord being so controlling and demanding. Your landlord actually thinks he can charge you a fee for a guest. That’s not dumb it’s crazy.
Make it official, file a landlord complaint with the RPA. I’ve had to do that on a previous landlord. Once you file you are protected against landord retaliation, so you’ll have more rights after filing a complaint than you had before filing. Not sure about your landlord, but when I filed a complaint against my ruthless landlord- he suddenly turned nice and left me alone. It was so worth it!!!

this isn’t really a response but its similar to how my LandLord is. He only allows for one visitor at a time due to the fact that the bathroom is in the hallway, and so is the shower. Not only that He always yells at me like I’m some kid off the street. I been on the waiting list for 10 years for another house and it finaly came up for me to have an interview, well they mailed my landlord a refferal letter. I took it to his office so the next day I saw him and very nicely asked him If he had filled it out, and he began to yell at me telling me he was not going to drop everything to fill that out that he was a busy person, I told him, “I didnt tell you to drop everything I just asked you if you filled it out” He yelled somemore and said he was busy and wasn’t going to stop and fill it out for me which may cause me to lose housing I need. Im 64 years old with a cronic illness, not well I might add and wish that I can do something about his yelling at me…I have been freezing for the past 2 months because he won’t fix the windows, and there is no heating system in this complex at all, Im afraid to ask him anything for fear he will yell at me…what should I do?

FIRST OFF YOUR LANDLORD CANNOT BE CHARGING YOU A $100 FOR HAVING A VISITOR OVER THAT’S ILLEGAL!!!!
LOOK IN YOUR LEASE AND CHECK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE A SECTION ON VISITORS/GUESTS. IN SOME APARTMENT
COMPLEXES YOU MAY HAVE A VISITOR/GUEST OVER FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 WEEKS. IF HE CONTINUES TO CHARGE YOU
EVERY TIME YOU HAVE A GUEST FILE A HARASSMENT SUIT AGAINST HIM- I WOULD.

Used to like my landlord until she started ignoring my requests, questions and inquires.

The thing I’ve learned with my current landlord is due a credit check on them. After all we get looked over like we’re carrying the black death. In my case we found our landlord was having financial issues, which was her reason for ignoring us.

Never again!
