Landlord took away our security deposit

My landloard didnt return my security deposit of 1800$ and asking me to pay more 800$. He is threatening to screw my credit report. We dont have a signed contract. I lived for 6 months and landlord took all my money making wrong claims. We gave a 60 day notice that we want to vacate and the landlord too asked us to move out by july 31st, as he found new tenants. We moved out by july 31st ,but after moving out he mailed us that it charged him 2600 for cleaning so we need to pay 800 more taking the deposit amount of 1800.

This is complete injustice. I dont know how to go about this?We cant speak to that guy because he talks in abusive languge.Please help.
