Problems with Landlord trying to store his stuff in my apartment

By Ashley Rutherford

I live at a motel that also has apartments available. I rented one of the one bedroom apartments but was told I had to clean it first….not a problem. I do that regardless of whether or not it looks clean. So I cleaned everything including the carpets because I was told that previous tenants were not very clean people. Since the apartment wasn’t ready to be lived in I am staying in one of the motel rooms. The previous tenants left all kinds of funiture behind in the apartment I rented that is in terrible condition…broken couches…broken chairs…not something you want in your home….stains everywhere and the smell of thses items is terrible….Since they left everything behind the landlord of course now owns these things….he refuses to remove them from my apartment…..he said he has nowhere to store these items…..I don’t understand why he’d want to keep such things but whatever…its his choice but I have paid rent on this apartment.  I refuse to live in filth. Then he tells me "If you think those things are bad you should see some of the things stored in other apartments." I couldn’t believe what I was hearing……On top of all that…..he got mad at me because I left a fan on to dry the carpets after cleaning them…..this is Arkansas and I know how prone we are to mold and other contaminants that could cause health problems…..I called myself doing him a favor by trying to prevent such things…..After I left my apartment I returned several times to check the carpets and just check on things…..later that night I sent my husband to turn the fan off and retrieve a few items we needed……when my husband went to open the door the landlord walked out….the landlord removed the power supply to our heater becuase he claims we left the heat on while no one was there…..not true…I had the fan on only……anyway….he removed the power supply to the only source of heat in the apartment and he put more stuff in my apartment for storage……What on earth do I do……I am so frustrated right now I could scream…..I am sure he is violating my rights but what do I do?…..someone please help…..I have spent everything my husband and I have just getting into this place and we have nowhere else to go…..the landlord is crazy and obviously not informed of Arkansas landlord / tenant laws…..trust me I will be moving as soon as I have the money again but in the mean time I’m stuck here…..anyone have any ideas???…please
