Unsafe heating system

By Kell

Hello, I have been renting a farmhouse in rural PA for about 5 years and just had our chimney (or flue) that is attached to our stove (that burns heating oil #2 or Kerosene) cleaned and inspected.  Of course the landlord wanted to do this for us but I insisted that we have an outside company do it.  Well it is not constructed of the right type of pipe and is generally a fire hazard for many reasons (wrong type of pipe going through floor, too many 90 degree angles, chimney is cracked and sitting on a wood frame in the attic, the cleaners removed 7 gallons of creosote from the chimney that had been cleaned only once, 2 years ago after a chimney fire) Nothing in the lease states that we are responsible to maintain the heating system. What do I do as heating season approaches?  Do I have the right to demand that they make it safe? My lease is only month to month, can they just tell me to leave?  My children go to school and there are not a lot of rentals in this district. What should I do?  I stared with sending in a copy of a report from the Chimney cleaners in with my rent check but I have not heard back from them.  I sent the rental agency an e mail asking for the e mail of the woman that we deal with so that there is written record of all conversation about the issue but I am really not sure what my rights are, if any?
