What do I do?

By lynn

My husband and I rented an apartment in July with a lease (both signatures), two months later he left me (don’t understand why).  He did say he would hold up his end of the rent (we shared the rent), and two months after paying his half, he says he can no longer pay it.  I have lost my job and I have explained to the landlord the situation.  I am willing to still give my half but the landlord cannot accept just the half (which is understandable … he too has bills).  So, the landlord has informed me that he will keep my deposit (which I paid myself) and consider that January rent and says he will not bother my husband for his half, but I need to be out the 1st of February.  I only have two weeks to find a place, so you can imagine how i am out there everyday looking for a place and a job.  My question is what are my rights in Hammond, Indiana if I  don’t find a place by the 1st of February (and believe me I do not want to take advantage of this landlord, he has been understanding)?  My husband lives with his parents so of course he is not worried, and it sounds to me that he will get off scotch free.  Please help me and inform me of my rights (if I have any).
