In California, landlords have 21 days to process and return your security deposit. The landlord has 21 days to give you an itemized list of all the deductions made from your security deposit, and return the remainder of your deposit. You moved out on October 1, 2012, and it’s now May 2013, so your landlord’s 21-day period has expired. Make sure to bring all your recorded communication (email, letters, text messages, voice mails) to court to show that you have made several attempts to contact the landlord.
