30 day notice

my lease is over june 30 2009..and i wanted to put my 30 notice in because i found a nice house for me and my family to move into..i an expecting a baby and need more room..but my landlord said i cant put my 30 day notice in until july 1 2009..so basically i have to finish out the rest of this month then pay for another whole month…before i can move out because basically they cant pro-rate….is this legal
