landlord broke year lease what are my rights

ok so my landlord of a whole month comes to the house to let us know we need to move at the end of april. since he said since i broke the lease april rent is free and i will give u a good recommendation letter and the deposit back this was a verbal notice not written he also said we absolutely did nothing wrong his engineer moved the date of dimilition up   does that sound right
