Rent after 60 day notice

By Tasha Thomas

I gave my 60 day noticed, and payed rent up until then even though I was no longer living there, which is fine. I just got a letter in the mail  saying that I owe another $648 for partial rent until the landlord could rent the unit. This partial rent is for the days after the 60 days were up, and the apartment allelgedly had still not been rented.

My question is what can I do about this? It seems unreasonable, and fradulent to me.

Hi Tasha, normally the only valid fee that your landlord can charge you is for the 60 days. Actually since you haven’t been living in the house during the 60 days and even paid for the monthly fee for two months upfront you can even have some of the money you paid to your landlord reimbursed if you can establish that the landlord isn’t exerting any effort to re rent the apartment you’ve lived in ever since you left the place. You can try to negotiate this with your previous landlord, file a law suit or simply file a formal complaint with RPA you can decide which option works best for you.
