charged rent after moving out

By Grant

We had a lease until august 19 but were askede if we could be out by the first so they could rent it out. we found a new place early so we said ok and sent a request in writing to end our lease early but never recieved a reply. Nevertheless they seemed ok with it and scheduled a final walkthrough on the 31st of July and we turned in our keys. When we got our damage deposit back recently we learned that they charged us 5 additional days of rent which occured after we turned in our keys and during which time we were living at our new house as per their request. Is this something I can recoup even though they didn’t give us anything in writing saying when our lease was up?

Hi Grant. Written document is necessary just for you to have a file of evidence just in case you will be needing it in the future. Anyway, you can talk to your landlord about the extra charges on your account. If you were not able to get the deposit in full the negotiation is then between you and your landlord. Since there are no written documents for ending the lease early.
