Empty Promises to Fix things

By Chelsea

I’m not entering week four of my battle with my landlord to fix the humidity level of my apartment. I bought a humidity reader that has read as high as 79% humidity. This high level of humidity has caused me to break out in a skin rash and has started to ruin my belongings. I moved out and am temporarily living with a friend. My landlord promised to fix the issue and had maintenance come out a couple times and then cut down a tree outside. I requested a dehumidifier be put in because my stuff is getting damaged. Last Thursday I went in and kindly told them I was tired of holding their hands through all this and it needed to be fixed immediately or I was going to report them – they could have cared less. My dad went in later that day as he was up in the area and they told him they ordered a humidistat and it would arrive on Friday 10/7. After more days of empty promises and "I dont know where it is" I’m beyond fed up. I dont want to go to court but this is ridiculous. My electricity bill is goign to be through the roof having a dehumidifier running constantly. What can I do?!!

Two options here: 1. report it to your local housing authority. With such an issue, that could already be a violation of your local building code. If it is, an inspector would come in and record all the violations your apartment has. Your landlord will be given x number of days to correct everything on the list; otherwise, the building would be declared condemned or uninhabitable. If that happens, you will be free to break your lease and your landlord will no longer be able to rent the place out.

2. You can file a formal complaint against your landlord. If you do this, a mediator could come in and try to find a solution for you. The court will not be involved just yet. This is a better option for your landlord because he has the chance to correct the problem before a record can be created. If he does not cooperate, then that’s the only time that a negative public image will be released against him. Choose well.
