HELP!!! Slumlord trying to keep my money!! Need advise

By lummusfam

SO I just moved out of a house I rented for 10 years. During that time we realized what a dump it really was but we were stuck and not able to leave. There was a front house occupied by us, and a granny unit in back occupied by others. 1st of all, the septic was terrible (he even asked that we do not flush t.p…….wierd) he only had it pumped 3 times while we were there…each time the plumber looked at us and said "this is for both houses??? This is a 2 person tank" Some winters we couldnt flush our toilets at all if it was to wet outside. 2nd he is now saying that he wants to hold from the deposit 1/5 of the linoleum replacement labor costs because of a couple little two inch scuffs in the floor (that are there from us replacing his broken fridge) The little tears in the linoleum are next to a 6" long 1/4" wide hole in the floor all the way to the ground from the ancient cemement founadtion splitting. This linoleum was watter damaged, thin and bubbly when we moved in.

When we left I made sure to do him right and get as much done for him as possible. Sadly we bought paint & painted the entire house and even paid for getting his carpets shampooed. This carpet is the 70’s 4 tone earthtones shag carpet. I feel now that I regret all of the extra things we did because he is not even thanking us, he is saying " there are a few spots that need touch up, so I have to pay someone to do that" AAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!! I know he is trying anything to keep my $$$$ because he has not worked in many years and his wife is tired of funding him.

I am not trying to be unfair, he said he is going to charge us for recleaning I bathroom (I am pregnant and may not have done a great job on that on and I know that) and cleaning up the yard. These are all things I agree with….I just want what is fair!

I do not know my rights….if anyone could help I would be greatful!!!!

Did you document the condition of the home when you moved in? Did you also take pictures when you moved out? That’s the only way you can prove that all those damages have already been there when you moved in. The septic tank issue could have been reported to the health department because it poses serious health risks. But at this point, you will need the help of a mediator to help you get your security deposit back. RPA has that option through their complaint center.
